What to look for in a Thermal Monocular

At Outdoors Warehouse, we have worked closely with hunters and farmers for many years providing them with HikMicro, Guide Outdoor and many other manufacturers collections of thermal monoculars, from compact entry-level units to high-resolution long-range devices capable of detecting a heat signature over 900 (and sometimes more) metres away.

The two numbers that matter most are detector resolution and NETD sensitivity. Resolution (e.g. 256×192 or 640×512) determines how much detail you see. NETD — measured in millikelvin (mK) — tells you how small a temperature difference the unit can detect. The lower the mK number, the better: anything under 25mK is excellent for hunting. Lens size (19mm, 35mm, 50mm) determines your field of view and detection range — bigger lenses see further but are heavier to carry and may have different considerations for field of view.
