Pairing Thermals & Spotlights
There’s a reason this setup is extremely popular.
Thermal spots the heat in total darkness:
-no light
- no noise
-straight through bush, grass, or fog
You see the animal glowing hot from your vehicle before they even know you're there.
With the animal located, now you are able to shine the spotlight directly on the target.
Now you have
- a clear view to identify the animal
- the ability to take the shot if needed
- illumination onto the area for collecting the animal.
Using both gives you advanced detection in the dark,
and illumination only when you're ready to confirm and act.
Alltogether, this helps:
1. Protect Stock
2. Control more pests, faster
3. Make night work safer
In the following example, we are using a Hikmicro FQ35 mounted on a Powa Beam 7" QH Spotlight with a remote folding handle & connected tablet.
The Ideal Combination
Each tool is powerful on its own — but together, they’re unmatched.
Whether you're a hunter tracking deer or a farmer locating stray livestock, this combo saves time, improves accuracy, and boosts safety. With the thermal connected to a tablet or phone in your vehicle, you can scan from the cabin, identify heat signatures, and then use the spotlight to confirm before taking the shot.

Which Thermal Should You Choose?
For most budgets, two standout brands are Guide and Hikmicro. Both offer reliable, high-quality devices suited to the needs of farmers and recreational hunters. As with most gear, you get what you pay for — entry-level models are functional but don’t match the clarity and performance of higher-end options. However, the good news is that thermal technology has advanced to a point where the budget options are increasingly viable for more and more forms of hunting.
For professional shooters or those wanting top-tier performance, you can stick with these brands at higher price points or step up to premium options like the FLIR series.
And what type of Spotlight should you get?
Powa Beam Spotlights come in 7", 9" and 11", with a few 5.75" variants also.
9" tends to fit in that sweet spot for roof mounted, and are certainly the most popular.
The major point of difference in spotlights is the choice of QH (Quartz Halogen) vs HID (High intensity discharge) lights. See below for comparison:
QH:
1. Warmer, yellow light
2. Instantaneous
3. Cheaper, depending on wattage
4. Less light, less range.
HID:
1. Bright White Light
2. Light requires short 'warmup' time for the light to reach its full potential
3. More expensive
4. Best performance light available, tighter spot and range.
Below are the current range of Powa Beam Spotlights (as at August 2025).
