Oilskin products require special care while storing & cleaning, you may also need to reproof occasionally to prevent dryness and promote longevity.
Storage & General Care
- Always store your Oilskin garments and gear in a dry, well-ventilated area
- Do not place in a cupboard or plastic bag for long periods of time as it may become mouldy
- If your Oilskin garment or gear has become mouldy, it is recommend leaving it under full sun for a couple of weeks
- If it is still mouldy, hand wash with pure soap and reproof
- If repairs need to be made, please make sure the area is reproofed after repairing to prevent leaking
Cleaning
- When the garment gets dirty, brush off dirt or sponge down with cold water, if extremely dirty, hand wash in cold water
- Do not machine wash or use detergent or hot water as this removes the oil and wax which are crucial to the Oilskin’s waterproofing qualities
- If the oilskin requires a full clean, it is recommended to use Wool/Oilskin Detergent or pure soap.
- Rinse well after washing and hang in a well ventilated area to dry
- The oilskin will then require reproofing if it is washed using soap or detergent as these will wash out the waterproofing qualities
Reproofing
- For smaller items and spot reproofing use the Reproofer Spray
- For larger items including coats it is recommended to us the reproofing wax
