Caring for your Torch

A torch is an important tool of everyday use that people often overlook. We used to think that torches were only useful at night while camping or in places without electricity – and were often a hindrance to pack as they were so bulky with the spare brick-size or D cell batteries they used to require.

Previous technology had us believing that the heavier the torch, the brighter it was. Fast forward to today – brands such as Olight have revolutionised torches to be much brighter, lighter and more durable than ever. The advancement is amazing, and it is not uncommon now to carry a torch all the time.

In this day and age torches do not only have one purpose. Most torches can be used for everything including (but not limited to); hunting, camping, boating, self-defence, hiking, emergencies and everyday use– making them invaluable to have accessible all the time. This is mainly because of their heavy duty design, lightweight materials, multiple modes, standard accessories and extended battery life.

Manufacturers are proud of their brand, and most offer warranties of two years. Though please be aware, as with any investment – the key to a long torch life is also how it is cared for. An easy maintenance routine from time to time with ensure the torch is at is best for a very long time. Below are some steps on how to care for your torch.

  1. Use quality batteries and chargers so as not to damage the light due to leaks or other self-destructive possibilities.
  2. Remove batteries when light will not be used for an extended period of it batteries are discharged.
  3. When using Li-ion batteries, it is recommended the use of “protected” batteries that limit charge and discharge.
  4. Clean contacts, threads and O-rings of the flashlights with clean cloth from time to time or as necessary (usually every 6 months should be sufficient). Tip: Use the eraser on the back of a pencil for cleaning contacts, but only use a microfiber cloth on lenses.
  5. If flashlight is used in we environment, lubricate O-rings more frequently to maintain watertight seal.
  6. After prolonged exposure to moisture, the bezel, lamp and batteries should be removed, inspected and cleaned. This should be done by a professional if you are not confident.
  7. Clean the circuit hear with alcohol soaked swab. Tip: A cotton bud is OK.
  8. Rub down front and back aluminium contact with sand paper, this will get rid of any build up and ensure contact areas are streamline.
  9. Remember to put the parts back in the same order as they were disassembled – you may need to research specific manufacturer recommendations for your torch if you are unsure.
  10. To get the best performance out of your torch, it is beneficial to have a spare set of charged batteries (possibly higher power like 3400mAh) not only for convenience, but to ensure consistency when testing the torch performance after cleaning.
